Dog Days
I don't know if it will be of much comfort to you,
But I was with him when he died.
I softly stroked his fur and told him, "It'll be okay. It'll be okay."
By then, the car with the cowardly driver was miles down the road.
And as the creature with the blood-matted fur took his last breath, I wept.
Then three strangers brought together by the horror of the moment
Bent and gently covered him with a blanket.
This day is one I will always remember...
